Title: Best of Friends, created September 2011

Best of Friends is an all digital painting illustrated entirely in Photoshop CS5. I wanted to create something painterly using a variety of digital paint brushes. I used one brush to create a fuzzy texture for Tod and Copper, and a few paint brushes and textures for the foliage. The piece took about seven hours to complete in a course of three days.

This drawing was created for a friend who is currently an animator at the Walt Disney Animation Studio in Burbank, CA. He has been involved in well known films such as Tangled and Prep and Landing 2. He offered me a tour of the studio back in September, and I didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation.

Winnie the Pooh was in production at the time, so the studio entrance was decorated like a Winnie the Pooh exhibit with original artwork and merchandise adorning the hallway. I got to see the beautiful and playfully decorated offices of Disney character concept artist Glen Keane, and Pixar director John Lasseter. My favorite part of the tour was walking through the Prep and Landing studio where the office cubicles were literally little houses with a roof, window, and door, decorated with Christmas lights. There were also little Christmas trees everywhere. I really loved how I could feel the project atmosphere while walking through the busy offices. So much attention is given to every detail of the animated films, and everyone is immersed in the world of the Disney characters. They don’t just create films there, they live it. It was absolutely inspiring.

Getting to roam through Disney’s Animation Studio is not an opportunity you get everyday. As a thank you to my friend for showing me around, I asked him what his favorite film was so that I could draw something personally for him. As soon as he told me “The Fox and the Hound,” I got started on this drawing immediately. Creating a Disney piece for a Disney animator certainly put the pressure on, but I had so much fun working on this. It was definitely the least I could do to show how grateful I was, and he liked the drawing. Success!

I hope the next time I visit the studio, it’ll be as a Disney artist myself. Maybe one day I’ll be giving hopeful artists tours, too.
